Desert camping feels magical when you are prepared for changing temperatures, dry air, and the kind of practical details that make a night outdoors comfortable instead of tiring.
Pack breathable light layers because desert days can still feel warm while evenings become cooler after sunset. A cotton shirt, light trousers, and a thin scarf or shawl are enough for most camp evenings without feeling heavy or overpacked.
Sun protection matters more than most travellers expect. Bring sunglasses, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and lip balm, especially if your plan includes long daylight hours in the dunes or a sunset safari before heading back to camp.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential for fort visits, dune paths, and evening camp walks. A light blanket or travel shawl is useful for cooler nights, while a reusable water bottle helps you stay comfortable in the dry desert air.
A practical desert camp checklist
Keep your overnight bag simple and easy to carry. Along with clothing and sun protection, pack personal medication, a phone charger or power bank, hand sanitiser, and any toiletries you prefer to use. A small day bag is useful for carrying essentials during a safari or city walk.
Desert sand can get into delicate items, so protect cameras and phones when you are moving between dunes. Choose layers rather than one heavy garment, and check what your accommodation already provides before packing bulky extras. This leaves more room to enjoy the evening comfortably.
